SysPeek Indicator Ported To GTK3, Install It In Ubuntu Via PPA

SysPeek is a system monitor AppIndicator that displays CPU, memory, swap and disk usage as well as network traffic.

SysPeek uses an animated AppIndicator icon which indicates the CPU load. Also, its icon turns red when the CPU reaches 100%. The actual CPU, memory, swap, network and disk usage are displayed in the indicator menu and are configurable so you can choose which info to display in the menu. There's also an option to launch System Monitor directly from the appindicator menu.

SysPeek hasn't been updated in a long time and it stopped working in recent Ubuntu versions. A while back I uploaded the latest SysPeek from BZR to the main WebUpd8 PPA. I added some extra fixes (some with the help of WebUpd8 reader DA) to the package but I'm not a programmer and the fixes were pretty much hacks. Because I wasn't too proud of my fixes (and there was an alternative - System Load Indicator), I decided not to write about it then.

Recently, Marco Trevisan (I'm sure you know him by know - he's behind important Unity changes like native window decorations, proper filter support for the Unity Spread and many others) ported SysPeek to GTK3 and fixed the bugs I was telling you about so I could finally write about it.

Compared to the old SysPeek version available in its official PPA (available for Oneiric and Natty only), the version available in the WebUpd8 PPA has an extra feature: the app comes with a preferences dialog which lets you configure what to display in the Indicator menu, etc.

Install SysPeek in Ubuntu 14.04, 13.10 or 12.04

To install the latest SysPeek Indicator (fixed by Marco Trevisan) in Ubuntu 14.04, 13.10 or 12.04 by using the following commands:

sudo add-apt-repository ppa:nilarimogard/webupd8
sudo apt-get update
sudo apt-get install syspeek

Or, if you don't want to add the main WebUpd8 PPA, grab the latest SysPeek deb from HERE.
